In a remarkable display of skill and sportsmanship, 17-year-old Xavier Baria Caspe emerged victorious at the 2024 More Than Fishing Surf Fishing Tournament, held this past weekend. The event saw an impressive turnout, with 161 competitors vying for the coveted title. Among them was Xavier’s uncle, Jhomar Baria, who also secured a commendable eighth place.
Xavier clinched his win with an impressive catch measuring 35.75 inches, a feat that secured him the top spot. Jhomar’s fish, measuring 28 inches, earned him a respectable position among the winners.
Xavier’s journey in fishing began when he was just 12 years old, thanks to his uncle Jhomar, who first brought him to the More Than Fishing tournament. From that moment, Xavier was hooked, continuously learning and honing his skills under his uncle’s guidance.

With his uncle by his side, Xavier publicly expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you. You taught me everything I needed to know.” This touching acknowledgment highlighted the close bond and mentorship that played a crucial role in his success.

The More Than Fishing Surf Fishing Tournament, now in its eighth year, was founded by husband and wife duo Jun Quitain and Sunshine Quitain. Their mission is to share knowledge about fishing, recommend reliable equipment, and foster a safe and kind community. The tournament aims to create a good community among fishing enthusiasts, raise awareness about proper fishing practices, and promote the Conservancy Code of Ethics in sport fishing.

This year’s tournament not only celebrated the champions but also successfully raised funds for the Pacific Beach Coalition, which is dedicated to preserving the ocean, coastal habitat, and wildlife, and ending litter through advocacy, education, community building, and citizen action. The event continues to grow in popularity and participation, underscoring its significance in the fishing community.
